What fun a simple rock can be!
The blue guy is from when I was in kindergarten, so he’s got a little wear and tear on him. We collected the rocks and our teacher painted them for us. The shape of the rock and the way it felt in my hand was what sold me on it.
And the first gift that my niece, Chloe gave me when she was just a toddler was a rock (just glad that she handed it to me and didn’t throw it!).
Susan has “arted” all her life and found it to be a good winter pastime in her snow-belt hometown of Ashtabula, OH.
After graduating from Miami University, Ohio with an MEd, Art Education and hours beyond her Masters at Notre Dame and BGSU, Susan brought her appreciation for art to middle schoolers, teaching full time for over a decade in North Ridgeville, Amherst, and Elyria, followed by substituting in Vermilion and Milan.
Susan started painting murals, doing illustrations and teaching private art classes. She began with portraits of people, but soon became proficient in animal portraits as well, and her work was commissioned by animal breeders in England, Sweden, France, and Japan.
Susan’s free-lance illustrations and design work have been in various magazines in the United States and Canada. She is presently a cartoonist for the Vermilion Photo Journal.
“I have been so lucky to have been involved with art at work & “play”. Art is a very important way for me to communicate thoughts & feelings.”
I like to think of the Burning River Boutique as an adoption center for paintings, photos, sculptures & other “Necessary Luxuries” looking for a good home.

“My husband and I moved to Vermilion Township in 1977 to a house that he, a retired firefighter, had built. I had a 40+ year career as a trauma nurse and clinical trial specialist. When I retired, I needed a relaxing hobby.
I began making gold jewelry with Swarovski crystals and vintage beads. I so enjoyed the play of colors and light, I decided to try painting with watercolors and fell in love with this form of artistic expression. It has been 15 years and I still love to paint. Seascapes and animals are my favorite subjects.”
